Idaho is a prime location for manufacturing, thanks in no small part to the abundance of natural resources and agricultural products in our region. From lumber products to chemicals, fabricated metal, and computer components, the manufacturers dotted across the state of Idaho create products using the raw materials from agricultural groups, forestry companies, and a plethora of other providers. This in turn results in a strong supply chain, with the economic ripples felt throughout the various sectors of our local economy.
Idaho has long been a leader in computer components, with the industry formerly serving as the largest employer in the state. While food processing now accounts for more jobs than computer component manufacturing, the sector retains a strong hold in Idaho. Component manufacturers create electrical systems and various pieces of computer systems, both for commercial and home uses. Some facilities also create highly-specialized mechanical parts which helps to keep these complex systems functional.
In addition to computer components, Idaho is well-known for the superior lumber and wood products created in our manufacturing facilities. Much of this output is thanks in no small part to the forestry industry in our state, which processes thousands of trees each year. Wood products manufactured in Idaho include raw lumber for construction applications, cabinetry, and furniture.
Beyond the large manufacturing groups responsible for several tons of output each year, Idaho is proudly home to many smaller manufacturing facilities. Many of these independent small businesses compete with larger groups, but they still retain the intimacy of a small company. Gem County is also home to its fair share of such manufacturers.
The Gem County Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Foundation works to encourage growth with the manufacturing sector, as this growth directly impacts the people who call our county home. As manufacturers are established and expand within the region, the small producers of raw products in Gem County are able to forge mutually-beneficial trade relationships with the manufacturers. This results in more revenue opportunities for these small producers, and it helps to stabilize the local economy. Simultaneously, the establishment of new manufacturers helps to spur on the creation of additional small businesses.
One of the many appealing attributes of Gem County is the diverse presence of businesses in our local area. Manufacturing only represents a portion of the economic activity that occurs in this portion of the state, which helps to draw new residents and create a brighter future for our residents.
